The Journey

I have lived in California all my life and have loved every moment of it with the occasional roller coaster ride. As a fashion student I love style and how every county, state, and city has its own. Then I traveled over 3000 miles to study in New York. What an eye opener! There is so much more than my little corner of so cal. I want to become a world traveler and reputable fashion show producer but most important I want to live. My journey starts here. What seems to be a simple geography assignment will actually become a life assignment in fashion and travel.

What Region is the Big Apple in?

The East Coast..almost as far away from Southern California as you can get in this country is New York. As far as regions go New York is located in the upper Northeast area of the US in what some would call the woodlands. The U.S is then further cut up into more areas of which New York..specifically Manhattan is located in the Megalopolis region and a common theme for this region is that there is a lot of urban growth and sprawl that brings along many urban problems.

After living in Queens, a borough near Manhattan in NY, for 4 months I saw just how this was true. There are no spaces between living spaces. No blocks between office buildings. It is very over grown so to speak if you consider growth to include concrete and not plants.

Just how overgrown are we talking. Well, in  the year 1980 New York had a population grand totaling 7,071,639. Only 20 years later and the empire state managed to increase that number to 8,008,288. Almost one million more human beings choosing to call New York their home.

I hope that gives you a small glimpse of the magnificent state of New York.

My Recent Semester in NYC

Hello GEOG321OL!

As an assignment for this class we are required to blog about the geography of a certain state in the US. I chose New York because last semester I studied there and now want to be bi coastal. California is fantastic but it is all I have ever known and despite the cold winter the East Coast experiences I still love New York for all it has to offer, specifically Manhattan...the fashion capitol of the country, seeing as I am a Fashion major! I hope you enjoy reading about how geographically different New York is from California and maybe learn some non geographical facts as we are at it.

Thanks! :)
