The Journey

I have lived in California all my life and have loved every moment of it with the occasional roller coaster ride. As a fashion student I love style and how every county, state, and city has its own. Then I traveled over 3000 miles to study in New York. What an eye opener! There is so much more than my little corner of so cal. I want to become a world traveler and reputable fashion show producer but most important I want to live. My journey starts here. What seems to be a simple geography assignment will actually become a life assignment in fashion and travel.

Manufacturing and Producing in New York

Home to the most skyscrapers in the United States, New York has many areas of production that they thrive in. One of the biggest which was previously mentioned, was the Textile Industry. But beyond that New York thrives in areas of health care and finance as well as the production of dairy products, livestock, veggies, and apples. They also boom in industrial areas such as printing and publishing and we cant forget, tourism.

    TEXTILES
    • The textile industry was briefly discussed in a previous article but I would like to expand.
The fashion or garment district is located just below Times Square and spans between 5th and 9th Avenues and 34th to 42nd street. 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue are best known for their high end boutiques and spectacular window displays year round but mainly in the winter. 7th Avenue is where the main offices are located such as design rooms, showrooms, PR companies, and some buying offices.

New York also hosts many fashion events the main ones including fall and spring fashion weeks. Usually held in Bryant Park or Lincoln Center, fashionistas can find fashion shows and industry events.

    Welcome to the Megaopolis

Forty-Seven Million people live here. I was 1 of 47 million people when I lived in Queens, NY. Not all of New York is categorized as a Megalopolis. The five boroughs are defiantly a part of this because... The boroughs include Staten Island, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and the smallest of the boroughs, Manhattan, which is home to almost 2 million people.

There are many industries that prosper in New York which make it a megaopolis. I would like to focus on the Fashion Industry.

The garment industry started out in New York and at the time it was the only center of its kind. This is wear people would make garments for slaves in plantations or construct their own clothes. People only bought tailor made clothing if they were extremely weathy. The sewing machine was invented in 1850 and after that the fashion industry was well, industrialized. After the civil war ready to wear clothing was a new hit with the construction of soilders uniforms. From then on fashion was a major industry just as the production of oil or steel. And it all started in New York.

"Writing in 1917, Abraham Cahan credited these immigrants with the creation of American style:
Foreigners ourselves, and mostly unable to speak English, we had Americanized the system of providing clothes for the American woman of moderate or humble means. The average American woman is the best-dressed woman in the world, and the Russian Jew has had a good deal to do with making her one."

Fashion inspiration came from all over the world as it does today. Back then it was because of all the immigration to the new world. Now we want to have the newest and the best styles, designs, and techniques.

Thank you to the many women nearly 200 years ago that decided it was time to commercialize the fashion industry and allow not only myself but many other women have careers in fashion. Making people feel beautiful and have the ability to create. :)

    Some Physical Features

By the book New York State is located in the Appalachian Highlands. However the name does not do it justice. The Highlands are actually of low elevation. Geologists have founds nine major land regions in New York.
    1. The Atlantic Coastal Plain
    2. Manhattan Prong and Taconic Mountains
    3. Newark Lowlands
    4. Hudson Highlands
    5. Wallkill-Hudson-Mohawk Lowlands
    6. Allegheny Plateau - Catskill Mountains - Erie Lowlands
    7. Ontario Uplands and Tughill Plateau
    8. St. Lawrence-Champlain Lowlands
    9. Adirondacks

There are three main rivers that run through the state: The Hudson, Mohawk, and Geneses Rivers; As well as four other major bodies of water including: The Atlantic Ocean, Lake Ontario and Erie, and Lake Champlain.
New York is also home to Niagara Falls, which is described as one of North Americas Natural Wonders.

You may be wondering what the weather is like in New York. While the climate in two states is never the same, the difference between California and New York is like night and day. In Manhattan one would experience a humid continental climate and the very hot and very cold temperatures. The lowest recorded tempurature was a staggering -52 degress on February 18, 1979 in Old Foge. The highest recorded temperature was a whopping 108 degress on July 22, 1926 in Troy.

Now what should one wear in a climate like this?

I have experienced New York in all seasons. Summer: Hot and Muggy Fall: Cool and Crisp Winter: Freezing Spring: Thawed Out and Warm. Those may not be the most technical terms however they describe it very well and in order to tell you what to wear when you visit I cannot use the technical terms.

If you haven’t noticed it is February 5th and winter is in full swing. Everywhere else but southern California is experiencing a chilly winter. Since December Manhattan has accumulated about 5 feet of snow, which is very rare for New York City.
Here are some key pieces I would I would pack if I were leaving for NY tomorrow:
