The Journey

I have lived in California all my life and have loved every moment of it with the occasional roller coaster ride. As a fashion student I love style and how every county, state, and city has its own. Then I traveled over 3000 miles to study in New York. What an eye opener! There is so much more than my little corner of so cal. I want to become a world traveler and reputable fashion show producer but most important I want to live. My journey starts here. What seems to be a simple geography assignment will actually become a life assignment in fashion and travel.

Welcome to the Megaopolis

Forty-Seven Million people live here. I was 1 of 47 million people when I lived in Queens, NY. Not all of New York is categorized as a Megalopolis. The five boroughs are defiantly a part of this because... The boroughs include Staten Island, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and the smallest of the boroughs, Manhattan, which is home to almost 2 million people.

There are many industries that prosper in New York which make it a megaopolis. I would like to focus on the Fashion Industry.

The garment industry started out in New York and at the time it was the only center of its kind. This is wear people would make garments for slaves in plantations or construct their own clothes. People only bought tailor made clothing if they were extremely weathy. The sewing machine was invented in 1850 and after that the fashion industry was well, industrialized. After the civil war ready to wear clothing was a new hit with the construction of soilders uniforms. From then on fashion was a major industry just as the production of oil or steel. And it all started in New York.

"Writing in 1917, Abraham Cahan credited these immigrants with the creation of American style:
Foreigners ourselves, and mostly unable to speak English, we had Americanized the system of providing clothes for the American woman of moderate or humble means. The average American woman is the best-dressed woman in the world, and the Russian Jew has had a good deal to do with making her one."

Fashion inspiration came from all over the world as it does today. Back then it was because of all the immigration to the new world. Now we want to have the newest and the best styles, designs, and techniques.

Thank you to the many women nearly 200 years ago that decided it was time to commercialize the fashion industry and allow not only myself but many other women have careers in fashion. Making people feel beautiful and have the ability to create. :)
